This restored 1857 lighthouse, reputed to be the tallest beacon on the Jersey Shore, features its original Fresnel lens. Visitors may climb 228 steps to the top for a panorama of the surroundings, including Brigantine, Absecon Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. The reconstructed Keeper's House serves as a museum. Allow 1 hour minimum.

The Civil Rights Garden at Carnegie Library 39 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. Atlantic City NJ 08401 USA Phone: (609) 344- The Civil Rights Garden at Carnegie Library is at 39 S. Martin Luther King Blvd. at Pacific Ave. Symbolism abounds in this tribute to individuals and events leading up to and during the civil rights movement. Eleven black granite columns are inscribed with passages from contributors to the struggle for equality. The columns increase in height but are unfinished, signifying that full equality has not been reached. A bronze bell, reflecting pool, plants, flowers and trees also can be seen. Allow 30 minutes minimum.

Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge US 9 & Great Creek Rd. Oceanville NJ 08231 USA Phone: (609) 652-1665 Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is 1 mi. e. of US 9 on Great Creek Rd. More than 275 species of waterfowl and other birds have been sighted at the more than 46,000 acres of the refuge's bays, channels and tidal marshes. The best seasons for wildlife observation are spring and fall. There is an 8-mile drive through wetland and upland areas and four trail loops ranging from a quarter of a mile to 5 miles in length.

Atlantic Heritage Center 907 Shore Rd. Somers Point NJ 08244 USA Phone: (609) 927-5218 Atlantic County Historical Society Library and Museum is just n. of the traffic circle at 907 Shore Rd. (CR 585). A 20,000-item collection includes American Indian stone implements, weapons, furniture and turn-of-the-20th-century clothing. Shipbuilding, one of the county's major 19th-century industries, is represented by boat models, paintings and tools. The historical society's library is open to the public for genealogical research and local history. Allow 30 minutes minimum.
